LTC Joseph Hitt, Ph.D.: The West Point Bionic Foot

The dinner banquet with guest speaker LTC Joseph Hitt, assistant professor in the Department of Civil and Mechanical Engineering at the United States Military Academy was a success! LTC Hitt is lead researcher and advisor for a multi-disciplinary team of West Point faculty, staff, and cadets developing a computer-controlled, powered prosthetic foot to support structured walking and running for below-the-knee amputees. LTC Hitt and cadet team members will describe current prosthetic device technology, technological challenges to the bionic foot project, and their approach to developing the bionic foot and will report results of on-going testing of the device by below-the-knee amputee, active duty Army soldiers.

Lieutenant Colonel Joseph Hitt, Ph.D. currently is serving as an assistant professor in the Department of Civil and Mechanical Engineering at the United States Military Academy. He was commissioned as an officer in the Corps of Engineers in 1989. His assignments include platoon leader, company commander, assistant project manager for intelligent munitions, and futures officer for the Joint Improvised Explosives Device Task Force. He holds a Ph.D. and a Master of Science in Mechanical Engineering from Arizona State University and Bachelor of Science in Aerospace Engineering from the University of Southern California. His areas of research include bionics and portable power.
Cadet Thomas Mangan is a senior mechanical engineering major at West Point and is this year’s team leader for the West Point Bionic Foot Project. Outside of the classroom, Mangan is captain of the Crew Team and previously held the positions of cadet regimental information systems officer and cadet regimental executive officer. In May Mangan will be commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the Army Corps of Engineers.
